CNN —The sound of glasses clinking, friends laughing and the metronomic thud of bass isn’t exactly what you’d expect to hear during a grand slam tournament. Against the backdrop of umpire calls and the thud of the ball on rackets, fans can also enjoy the melodic sounds of “a rotating roster of DJs” as they watch the world’s best tennis players compete. James Ewing lives in Melbourne and regularly attends the season’s first grand slam. On Saturday, the 29-year-old watched a game on Court 6, sitting opposite the infamous Courtside Bar for the first time. “One of the many additions to enhance the player and fan experience at Melbourne Park” she wrote on X, formerly known at Twitter.

TURIN, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Stefanos Tsitsipas retired after just three games of his Green Group clash against Holger Rune at the ATP Finals on Tuesday, handing the Danish debutant his first victory in the event. It's a shame also not to give that spot to someone else to at least try and do something with it," Tsitsipas said. Had Tsitsipas withdrawn before the match, first reserve Hurkacz would have played Rune in a live match with the Pole still having a chance to progress in the tournament. "I hate retiring from matches," added Tsitsipas, who claimed the biggest title of his career at the event in 2019. "I have never played that well in my life and lost," Rune said on court.

TURIN, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Stefanos Tsitsipas retired after just three games of his Green Group clash against Holger Rune at the ATP Finals on Tuesday, handing the Danish debutant his first victory in the event. Greek world number six Tsitsipas looked uncomfortable as he trailed 2-1 and after consulting with a doctor at the changeover he decided that he could not continue. Tsitsipas, who lost in straight sets to Jannik Sinner in his opening match on Sunday, appeared to be troubled by a back problem and left the court to a few jeers from the large crowd inside the Pala Alpitour. Rune, who lost to world number one Novak Djokovic in his first match on Sunday, will now face Sinner in his final round-robin match still with a chance of reaching the semi-finals. Sinner has enjoyed his best year on Tour and now has 59 match wins in 2023, but none would have given him more pleasure than taking down six-time ATP Finals champion Djokovic. "In the second set tiebreak he played a bit better than me but I think I was brave in the big moments. Sinner made his move at 5-5 in the opening set as Djokovic briefly lost focus after leading 40-0 on serve. A double-fault at deuce was cheered by the crowd and Sinner then converted the break with two punishing backhands. When Sinner then moved 6-5 ahead on serve, Djokovic sat in his chair and conducted the jeers before a calm service hold sent an epic tussle into a shoot-out.

TURIN, Italy, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Jannik Sinner made a dream start to the ATP Finals with a comprehensive 6-4 6-4 defeat of Stefanos Tsitsipas in their opening Green Group clash on Sunday. World number one Novak Djokovic begins his Green Group quest later on Sunday when he faces Danish youngster Holger Rune. Sinner wrapped up the opening set in 40 minutes and when he broke serve at the start of the second set he never looked like relinquishing control against a flat-looking Tsitsipas. "It was a long week before coming here and I was excited to finally step on court," the 22-year-old Sinner said. Djokovic, bidding for a record seventh title at the event, will seal the year-end world number one ranking for an eighth time if he wins one group match.

TURIN, Italy (AP) — If Jannik Sinner was feeling any pressure as the crowd’s overwhelming favorite at the ATP Finals, the Italian certainly didn’t show it during a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opening match at the season-ending event for the year’s top eight players. Supported by chants of “Vai Jannik” ("Go Jannik") and signs that read “Facci Sognare” ("Let us dream"), Sinner gave the Italian fans just what they came for Sunday with his blistering baseline shots and strong serve. “The match went really, really well and the crowd support was crazy,” Sinner said on court as fans chanted his name. Later in the green group, Novak Djokovic was to revive his budding rivalry with Holger Rune needing only one more match win to secure the year-end No. Matches in the red group on Monday feature Carlos Alcaraz vs. Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev vs. Andrey Rublev.
